Why the Holy Spirit might be Missing

We all face a real challenge in our relationship with the Holy Spirit, that we must acknowledge.

It is this.

Because the Holy Spirit is a guide and a teacher, He does not ignore our will or force us to do anything.  God has always given us freewill, from the beginning.  When the Holy Spirit works, it includes our will so that we are partners in every work He does with us. (Philippians 2:12-15)

If we want to see the Holy Spirit revolutionize our marriage, we must make godly choices.  We cannot sit back and expect His presence to make our choices for us.  Nor can we charge ahead and try to “improve” our marriage assuming we are not in need of His power and leading. (2 Timothy 1:7)

So, what can we do to place ourselves, in the right place, for His greatest work in us?   What is the secret to maximizing the work of the Holy Spirit?  How are we to be “filled” with the Holy Spirit?

Most simply, it is to humble ourselves. (Luke 18:17)

Humility is a strange thing.  Notice in Galatians 5:22 that humility is not mentioned as a fruit of the Spirit.  That is because humility is a choice of the will, not a gift. (James 4:6)  But it is related to the fruit because humility is the best soil in which the fruit of the Spirit grows.  (Matthew 13:18-23)

As much as we might wish, God cannot give us humility. We must choose it ourselves, just as Jesus did. (Philippians 2:3-8)   And that will be a struggle for a while.  Why?

We believe that humility will to cost us everything that we value.  The perfect life, full control, safety, comfort, our dreams…  But this is a lie.  Who has a perfect life?  Who is really in control?  Who do we know that is truly safe and comfortable?  When were our perfect dreams going to be realized in this life?

What is true is that humility will test your belief in God’s sovereignty.  And it will always seem counter-intuitive and feel uncomfortable. But it is the WAY if you want more of the Holy Spirit’s work in our life. (1 Peter 5:5-6)

So what does humility look like in marriage?  And what choices should we make to experience more of the Holy Spirit’s power?

That’s our topic for next week!
